- Why should I enroll in a flex plan? Sometimes
referred to as a cafeteria plan, flex plan, or a Section
125 plan, a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) lets you
set aside a certain amount of your paycheck before paying
income taxes or Social Security tax.
During the year, participants have access to this money
for reimbursement of expenses that insurance does not
cover. For example: deductibles, co-pays, and other
eligible expenses not covered by insurance. Prescription
drugs and medical supplies. Dental services, orthodontics,
and dentures. Eyeglasses, contacts, solutions, and eye
surgery. Weight-loss programs (associated with a specific
disease). Chiropractic services. Psychiatric care and
psychologist's fees. Smoking cessation programs. Adult
and child daycare services. Adoption expenses.
When you use tax-free dollars to pay for these expenses,
you realize an increase in your spending power, and
substantial tax savings. These are all important reasons
for you to enroll in your company's flex plan.
- My company doesn't have a flex plan, what should
I do? Companies sometimes don't have flex plans
because they think their employees aren't interested.
The best way to get a flex plan started is to let your
Human Resource department know that you want one.
- What is the deadline for filing a claim? The
claim must be received no later than 90 days after the
plan year ends. If your plan year ends December 31, then
the deadline would be March
31 of the following year, unless it is a leap year. In
that case, it would be March 30.
